Reading As Communication, by Frank B. May and Louis Rizzardi is the academic text basis for Literacy, No Book Required, Ltd.
“Writing and Reading are social acts that require thinking. Reading is a form of thinking. Writing is a form of thinking. They are both forms of communication. Writing and reading, like painting a picture, like interpreting a song, are problem-solving acts.
A child who solves the problem of getting the candy off the shelf by using language and primary tools, is very much like the child who solves the problem of getting the meaning off the printed page.
In both problem-solving situations she must rely on past experiences that have helped… form concepts….. In both problem-solving situations she must use language as a secondary tool. In both situations, she makes predictions and attempts to confirm them.
Reading and Writing, like searching for candy,……are problem-solving events.”
“What matters…….is to create learning experiences that are appropriate for extending….presentknowledge, …interests, and talents to widen [the] zone of proximal (next) development.”
“The child should gradually take over more responsibility for his own learning.”Say something interesting about your business here.
